But thus saith the Lord, even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children. Isaiah 49:25.
The youth are the objects of Satan’s special attacks.100Gospel Workers, 207.
Wherever we turn, the battle goes on unceasingly…. Multitudes of the youth are swept away by the overwhelming tide of evil. In every earnest Christian heart the question rises, “Why, oh, why, in a land of Bibles and Christian teaching, can the adversary of souls exert over our youth a power so mighty, so unrestrained?” The reason is apparent. Parents are neglecting their solemn responsibility.101The Signs of the Times, November 3, 1881.
If a field is left uncultivated, a crop of weeds is sure to appear. So it is with children. If the soil of the heart is uncultivated, Satan sows his seeds of anger and hatred, selfishness and pride, and they quickly spring up, to bear a harvest that parents reap with bitter regret. Too late they see their terrible mistake.102The Signs of the Times, January 1, 1902 (The Review and Herald, January 24, 1907).
One of the signs of the “last days” is the disobedience of children to their parents.103Child Guidance, 229.
The sin of rebellion against parental authority, lies at the very foundation of the misery and crime in the world today.104SDA Bible Commentary 2:1009.
Jesus loves children and youth. He rejoices when He sees Satan repulsed in his efforts to overcome them. Many a youth is in imminent peril through manifold temptations, but the Saviour has the tenderest sympathy for him, and sends His angels to guard and protect him. He is the Good Shepherd, ever ready to … seek for the lost, straying sheep.105The Signs of the Times, January 1, 1902 (The Review and Herald, January 24, 1907).
Parents stand in the place of God to their children, and they will have to render an account, whether they have been faithful to the charge committed to their trust.106The Review and Herald, October 14, 1875.
[Christian parents,] be true to your trust. God will help you. Guided by Him, your children will grow up to bless and honor you in this life and in the life to come.107The Signs of the Times, January 1, 1902 (The Review and Herald, January 24, 1907).

Dear Friends,
Some years ago, Ron got me a computer desk. It seemed sturdy enough, but over time it started to fall apart since it was only pressed wood. Some time later, Ron’s boss gave us a much sturdier desk. It was very heavy and appeared to be solid wood. Imagine my disappointment when I noticed an area that had been injured showed that it was also pressed wood overlaid by veneer.
How often we are like those two desks. Our profession does not match what is really inside. Just as the desk Ron bought me was easy to identify as cheap, pressed wood, so it is easy to spot some professed Christians for what they really are, for their life does not match their profession.
There are others, however, who appear righteous outwardly, but their heart is far from our Dear Saviour. Often they do not realize this themselves. In that day when the Great Shepherd separates the “sheep” from the “goats” their veneer will be made plain. “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Matt 7:21-23
Jesus proclaimed a woe upon the Scribes and Pharasees whose profession did not match their true condition. “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.” Matt 23:25-28 How careful we must be that this is not our condition.
Paul advises, “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” 1 Cor 10:12 “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” Phil 2:12 May we give diligence to make our calling and election sure, they we will be a solid Christian inside as well as outside is my prayer. (2 Peter 1:10)
