Holy and Reverend is His Name

We are never in any manner to treat lightly the titles or appellations of the Deity…. The angels veil their faces in His presence. The cherubim and the bright and holy seraphim approach His throne with solemn reverence. How much more should we finite, sinful beings, come in a reverent manner before the Lord, our Maker!

I saw that God’s holy name should be used with reverence and awe.

Some think it a mark of humility to pray to God in a common manner…. They profane His name by needlessly and irreverently mingling with their prayers the words, “God Almighty”—awful, sacred words, which should never pass the lips except in subdued tones and with a feeling of awe.

Those who realize the greatness and majesty of God, will take His name on their lips with holy awe. He dwelleth in light unapproachable; no man can see Him and live.

If Christ were on earth today, surrounded by those who bear the title of “Reverend” or “Right Reverend,” would He not repeat His saying, “Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ”? Matthew 23:10. The Scripture declares of God, “Holy and reverend is his name.” To what human being is such a title befitting? How little does man reveal of the wisdom and righteousness it indicates! How many of those who assume this title are misrepresenting the name and character of God! Alas, how often have worldly ambition, despotism, and the basest sins been hidden under the broidered garments of a high and holy office!

“The name of the Lord” is “merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, … forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.” Exodus 34:5-7. Of the church of Christ it is written “This is the name wherewith she shall be called, The Lord our righteousness.” Jeremiah 33:16. This name is put upon every follower of Christ.

Dear Friends,

Some years ago, we attended a music festival at Union College. Academy bands from the Mid-American Union joined the college’s band for several days of practice and concerts. The music was beautiful. One musical selection was not so beautiful, however. Someone was not quite in tune with the rest of the orchestra. Once that person fine-tuned his instrument, the rest of the concert was perfect and inspiring.

How often we are like that one instrument. Our life is not quite “on pitch.” Something is not fine-tuned. Only by following our Dear Saviour’s Instruction Manual, the Holy Scriptures, can our life become one harmonious whole. How important, then, is it that we spend time in the Word and in prayer. How vital to our present and future happiness it is, that we allow nothing to stand in the way of communion with our Precious Orchestra Leader.

As our life comes into harmony with God’s Word, we will be in harmony with our brethren. As we order our life according to His Word, we will be in tune with one another. Yet, it must be “unity in the of the faith” never compromising the truth for the sake of harmony. Eph 4:13 “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” Psalm 133:1 “For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free, and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body, is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body, is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. And if they were all one member, where were the body? But now are they many members, yet but one body. And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour, and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked: That there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care one for another. May we “study to show [ourselves] approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Tim 2:15 May we pray as did David, “Teach me thy way, O LORD, I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.” “Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.” Psalm 86:11, 119:133
